Individual Psychotherapy in Kansas
I'm Amy Johansson, PsyD, a licensed clinical psychologist (Kansas License #03498) offering individual psychotherapy throughout Kansas via secure telehealth. I work with adults and teens ages 13 and older.
If you're looking for a therapist in Kansas and want someone with specialized training in anxiety, depression, trauma, and medical-related emotional health, I'd love to connect. I offer a free 15-minute consultation to see if we're a good fit.
You May Recognize Yourself in Some of This
The people I work with don't always arrive with a clear diagnosis or a neat explanation of what's wrong. More often, they're carrying something they can't quite name. Some of what I hear most often:
You feel anxious more often than you feel okay, and you're not sure why
You go through the motions, but nothing feels meaningful or energizing
Something from your past keeps showing up in your present — in your relationships, your reactions, your choices
A medical condition or health challenge is affecting you emotionally in ways you weren't prepared for
You're under constant pressure — at work, in school, in your family — and you're running low on ways to cope
You've been through something difficult and haven't fully processed it yet
You just feel stuck, and you're ready to do something about it
If any of this feels familiar, individual psychotherapy can help you make sense of what's happening and start moving forward.
What I Work With
I specialize in working with adults and teens navigating:
Anxiety and excessive worry
Depression and low motivation
Trauma and past experiences that are still affecting you today
Academic, work-related, and performance stress
Emotional distress related to medical conditions or chronic illness — including chronic pain, gastrointestinal disease, neuropathy, traumatic brain injury, and cancer
Substance use
My background includes specialized training in neuropsychological assessment, which shapes how I approach therapy for clients whose emotional experience is closely tied to their physical health.
My Approach to Therapy
My style is warm, direct, and collaborative. I take time to understand you as a whole person — not just the presenting problem. I believe therapy works best when it feels like a genuine partnership, and that's how I show up in every session.
Depending on what you're working through, I draw from:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — to identify and shift the thought patterns keeping you stuck in anxiety, self-doubt, or low mood
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) — to build psychological flexibility so difficult emotions don't have to control your choices
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills — for when emotions feel overwhelming or relationships feel hard to navigate
Mindfulness-based strategies — to slow things down and increase awareness of what's actually happening inside
Client-centered therapy — because your goals and your voice always lead the process
Sessions are 50 minutes. We start by getting clear on your goals, and from there the work is shaped by what you need.
Telehealth Individual Psychotherapy Across Kansas
All therapy sessions are offered via secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth. This means you can work with a licensed clinical psychologist regardless of where in Kansas you're located — whether you're in a city with plenty of local options or a more rural area where in-person mental health care is harder to access.
You'll need a private space and a stable internet connection. Many clients find telehealth just as effective as in-person sessions, with the added convenience of not having to commute. I also offer individual psychotherapy in California for clients residing there.
What Therapy Can Do for You Over Time
Therapy isn't a quick fix, and I won't suggest it is. But real change is possible, and most people notice meaningful progress well before the work is complete. Over time, many of my clients describe:
Feeling less controlled by anxiety or emotional reactivity
Greater clarity about who they are and what they actually want
The ability to set boundaries without guilt
More confidence when facing difficult decisions
Relief from the weight of past experiences
A renewed sense of direction after feeling lost or stalled
The goal isn't to change who you are. It's to help you live more fully as yourself.
Fees for Individual Psychotherapy in Kansas
Individual therapy sessions in Kansas are $200 per 50-minute session. Sliding scale options are available — financial concerns should never be a barrier to getting support.
I am not currently in network with insurance providers, but I can provide documentation for out-of-network reimbursement. I recommend contacting your insurance company directly to confirm your coverage before we begin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?
No. Many people begin therapy without a formal diagnosis. If you're struggling, that's enough reason to reach out. A diagnosis may emerge from our work together, or it may not — either way, it doesn't determine whether therapy is right for you.
How long does therapy usually take?
It depends on what you're working on and what your goals are. Some people come with a specific, time-limited challenge. Others find value in longer-term work. We'll revisit your progress regularly and adjust as we go.
What if I've tried therapy before and it didn't help?
That's worth talking about in our first conversation. A poor fit, the wrong approach, or timing that wasn't right can all affect how therapy goes. Bringing that history in usually helps us get oriented faster and work more effectively together.
Is telehealth therapy available across all of Kansas?
Yes. Because sessions are conducted via telehealth, I can work with clients anywhere in Kansas — including areas where local mental health options are limited or where scheduling in person isn't practical.
Do you offer therapy for teens?
Yes. I work with teens ages 13 and older. If you're a parent exploring options for your teenager, I'm happy to talk through whether individual psychotherapy might be a good fit during a consultation.
